DOD budget a few years ago was $680 B.
The rest of the world’s advanced nations *combined* was $640 B.
Let’s add details.
When a defense contractor develops a system, it has to get tested by an assigned military organization.
The company can spend a decade doing this. The contractor moves people to the test location, and the taxpayer pays all the employees’ salaries and OT, plus housing, plus vehicle rental, plus per diem.
Even the non-degreed guys make bank. At one test, there was one set of the grunts whose job was to release a rope at the beginning of the day and fasten it at the end, standby in between. With all of their overtime, they made $80K annually, plus $1500 monthly for housing, plus vehicle lease, plus all their food.
I have watched a set of university profs set up a small company to build an item for the army. They sat on the grant money for years until the deadline, push out a piece of shit, then reincorporate, and repeat the process every couple years.
When you think of government welfare, do not think of some unwed minority parent.
Think of university engineers or science PhD’s making $120,000 to do nothing.
Think of defense contractor board members whose interest is a diversified portfolio, not the product to defend the nation.
Think of how the government’s solution to the budget problem is the furlough their own civilian employees, who only make up a slim minority of the DOD budget. The rest goes to private contractors and requisitions.
