I rather think both authors took artistic license here, sacrificing universality for pith. I mean, can a journalist who exclusively reports on the latest high school football scores *really* be said to be afflicting the comfortable? If they’re doing that, they might well get fired!
No, I think Mencken was classifying the most *important* newspaper journalism, the most vital in his opinion, and I think Banksy was doing the same with art. Not every page-six report on the most beautiful Academy Awards gowns or every color-field painting is meant to save the world, but Mencken and Banksy both apparently admire those works that at least make a go of it.
